Worldwide Goat Project Nepal — A Story of Hope, Health, and Community Transformation

For more than three decades, Daniel (Dan) Laney has combined a deep love of goats, a passion for travel, and a lifetime of educational service to uplift rural communities in Nepal. With 32 years of Nepali travel experience, 50 years in education, and a personal connection to goats since childhood, Dan founded Worldwide Goat Project Nepal (WGPN) to promote practical, sustainable improvements in goat husbandry and community well-being. The Vision and Mission
Worldwide Goat Project Nepal works to provide sustainable livelihoods by improving goat health and productivity and offering income-generating opportunities to farmers — with a special emphasis on underserved villages and women goat herders in Nepal’s mountain regions.
At its core, WGPN’s mission includes:
- Delivering medical supplies and basic tools to support goat health in remote communities.
- Donating young female goats to families and training them to multiply herd resources.
- Teaching “best practices” in goat husbandry, helping farmers increase production and income.

A Personal Calling Turned Global Effort

Dan’s personal journey to Nepal began in the early 1990s, traveling as a visitor and explorer. Over time he came to understand not only Nepal’s breathtaking beauty but the profound role that goats play in the lives of rural families — as sources of food, income, and resilience.
From this understanding grew a vision: not just to visit Nepal, but to actively support its goat-rearing communities by sharing knowledge and resources grounded in decades of livestock experience.
Projects That Make Change Happen
Goat Husbandry Training
Training workshops — often held under village trees or in community spaces — teach:
- How to ensure continuous access to clean water.
- Techniques to keep feed elevated and clean, reducing parasite loads and improving nutrition.
- Low-cost strategies like castration of males to prevent inbreeding and improve herd genetics.
- Basic animal care, including hoof trimming and neonatal attention.
These sessions empower farmers to produce healthier herds and improve milk and meat yields.

Female Goat Donations
WGPN supports a “pass-it-forward” model: after attending training and demonstrating commitment to best practices, a farmer may receive a young female goat. Recipients agree to pass the first female offspring to another needy family, creating ongoing growth and shared prosperity in their community.

Art & Youth Engagement
WGPN collaborates with local schools and creative partners to extend the impact beyond agriculture. Projects include:
- Goat Art Project — students design goat-themed artwork that is turned into greeting cards; proceeds support school programs and purchase art supplies. CLICK HERE
- Penpal Letters and Story Books — connecting youth across cultures and sharing the story of goats and their benefits. CLICK HERE
These activities not only raise funds but also foster pride and empowerment among young people.

National Herd Partnerships

Dan also works with larger institutional partners in Nepal. For example, he assists with the Saanen Herd at the National Goat Research Program (NGRP), helping improve herd management through improved water access, hygiene, feeding protocols, and biosecurity — foundational elements for healthier dairy goats. How It’s Funded
When Dan is not in Nepal, he continues to judge goat events across the United States. His judging compensation covers his personal travel expenses, while medicines, tools, and donated goats are funded by gifts and modest sales of handcrafted items, such as cloth goats made by women artisans.

Upcoming event, where you may help: Goat Expo, (Sedalia, Missouri), on May 28th, at 9 am, ADGA judge, Daniel Laney will be teaching a class on Selection of Correct Type: Form Meets Function.
